The Need for Speed

Water that sits in your home is liable to contribute to mold. That is why speed is of the essence when cleaning up a leak. Dry up the water, and you may well prevent the mold, or at least slow it down. Saturated carpet and wallboard must go if they’ve been wet more than 48 hours; they’re ruined anyway.

Legally, if you’re a landlord, you have a responsibility to provide mold-free living conditions. Tenants can sue if mold contamination makes you sick, if a home inspection proves elevated mold levels.

Legally, if you’re an employer, the workplace you provide for your employees must have air free of spores and otherwise be free of mold contamination. Lawyers may protect your rights and help you recover any damages but sometimes you can prevent the damages yourself with fast cleanup.
