A Noxious Substance: Mold

Moldy Window Frames

Noxious substance

Potentially mold can cause health problems. Many of these health problems are due to the fact that mold can be an allergen as well as a toxin and carcinogen. Allergens are the core of allergic reactions. Toxins are actual poisons. Touching or inhaling mold can invoke either complication, depending on if the person is vulnerable and/or the mold is an allergin, or contains a toxicant. Once mold has gained a foothold in your house, the contamination can be difficult to control. Hidden in your basement, walls, attic, or crawlspace, corners of your moistest rooms like bathrooms or laundry rooms, or kitchens, mold can quickly develop to dangerous levels.

Vigilance is essential if your household contains someone sick, or chronically ill, elderly, or very young because these individuals are the most vulnerable. Cold or asthmatic symptoms can be caused by mold exposure, such as sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, skin rash, and dermatitis.

Mold test kits are available, but if mold could be the result of negligence on behalf of a landlord or contractor, it makes sense to have professionals check your air quality. Professional mold inspectors can not only provide reliable test results, they can also provide documents which can be used in court if a lawyer determines if a party might be liable based on carelessness or negligence, or some other factor.

Mycotoxicoses

Mycotoxins are toxins produced by mold and fungi. Mycotoxicoses are actual diseases caused by mycotoxins, i.e. secondary metabolites of molds. Hundreds of mycotoxins have been identified, and many are pathogenic. But all illnesses from mold are not related to mold-poisons.

The most common reaction to mold is allergic in nature. It can be from exposure that is either dermal or by inhalation, and includes symptoms like wheezing, rash, watery eyes, runny nose, itchy eyes, coughing, and redness of the eyes.

Testing your home or work environment for mold is a healthy move. That cold you have that’s been going on for months may be a mold allergy coming from mold in your walls or crawlspace.

Introducing Cladosporium

Cladosporium is a genus of mold that rarely produces lethal disease in humans except for causing skin and nail, sinus and lung infections. There are about forty individual species of Cladosporium, most of which are plant pathogens. When Cladosporium species spores are airborne, they can be allergens, and in large amounts might affect asthmatics, children, the elderly and individuals with respiratory disease or sensitivity. Cladosporium does not produce major mycotoxins, but the odor can be tied to volatile organic compounds, i.e. VOC. Species feed on dead herbaceous and woody plants, textiles, rubber, paper, food, floor, carpet and mattress dust, damp acrylic painted walls, wallpaper, drywall, HVAC insulation, filters and fans and wet insulation in mechanical cooling units. (Not a complete list.) This is a very common species of mold, found outdoors all year, with lesser concentrations in the winter. If the indoor concentration is not lower than the outdoor concentration, you probably need to do something about it.

Toxic Mold in Seeds Are Possible Carcinogen

Sunflower seeds contain a toxin produced by mold that could increase health risk. Michigan State University researchers found that sunflower seeds, corn, peanuts, pistachios, and almonds contaminated with aflatoxin can contribute to liver cancer. Aflatoxin is considered as a potent liver carcinogen. The carcinogen makes its way into the food systems of low income countries after it is processed.

Mom Finds Large Clump of Mold in Fruit Pouch

A woman in Springfield, Missouri, reported mold in a fruit pouch purchased at the local ALDI store.

According to Ashley Lamb, she found a large clump of mold inside her 2-year-old son’s favorite Little Journey Apple Mango pouch. “He came running back in, ‘It’s yucky. It’s yucky!’ and spitting, and he normally doesn’t spit, and he was just spitting and drool running everywhere,” she said.

The grocery chain ALDI issued the following statement on March 30th, “ALDI takes the safety and integrity of the products we sell very seriously and our Little Journey baby line is no exception…. Our Little Journey Organic Food Puree pouches are USDA certified organic and contain no artificial preservatives. While extremely rare, if a pouch is punctured and exposed to air, mold can grow. It was brought to our attention that this occurred with pouches that were available for purchase at our Springfield store located at 421 E. Battlefield. Out of an abundance of caution, we have removed all Little Journey Organic Food Puree pouches from our store shelves in the Springfield area… We sincerely regret any inconvenience or concern this situation may have caused. If a customer has any concerns about this product, we encourage them to visit their local Springfield ALDI store and we’ll gladly refund the purchase price of the Little Journey Organic Food Puree pouches.”

Experts Warn About Possibility of Mold Growth in Hay Bales

As snow from winter has started to melt, the experts are warning about the possibility of mold growth in stored hay bales.

According to Montana State University forage specialist Emily Glunk, the excess moisture conditions produced due to melting, freezing, and re-melting of snow increases the risk of mold-infestation.

“It is always a good idea to test hay before feeding it to your livestock, especially if it has been stored outside,” she said.

Feeding Mold-infested bales to the cattle can cause several health issues, including respiratory problems.

If you suspect a mold problem, have your house/farm tested for mold.

Do You Have Mold in Your Apartment?

Mold is a health hazard and living in a mold-infested apartment can cause serious health issues including lung diseases, asthma, and allergies.

Therefore, if you think your apartment is prone to mold-infestation, here a few tips that can help you address this situation:

  1. Take steps to reduce moisture in the susceptible areas, especially bathroom and kitchen. Using fans and opening the windows in these areas can go a long way in this regard.
  2. Make sure to open all the windows in your apartment for at least 5 – 10 minutes every day. Improving overall ventilation discourages mold growth.
  3. Dusty, moist surfaces provide an ideal condition for mold growth. Therefore, try to increase the frequency of dusting/cleaning the window frames and outside of your toilet tank.

Meanwhile, have your home tested for mold to ensure a healthy life for your family.

Green Winter: Don’t Let Mold Take Over.

Locked up for winter, trapped with the stale recirculating air. Guess what’s living in your winter-sale air? Mold spores, of course. It can be especially bad in a tight new home because all of that stale air has been circulating along with the heat.

Inside the house, if you have any trapped moisture in areas like the kitchen, or bathroom, or inside the walls under leaking pipes, or in your crawlspace, that is where the mold is hiding. If there’s a leak, it might be growing right out in the open when you can see it. Winter is the perfect time to call in the mold inspector to see if your home has been invaded while it is still locked up,sans ventilation.

ByeByeMold Has a New Presence on Facebook and Twitter

Mold has an adverse affect on the very sick, the very old and the very young. That’s why ByebyeMold’s most recent ads on Facebook show an infant in the arms of his concerned father. Every parent is going to be concerned about the quality of their indoor air, especially if they know the findings of the University of Cincinnati, EPA, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital who performed a decade long study assessing the children’s health and exposure to indoor molds and allergens, Reponen et al. report these findings in an upcoming issue of The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (JACI). They discovered that mold exposure in infancy was a major risk factor for these babies devloping asthma.

If you have young children in your home, or are expecting soon, you should have the area tested. If you are in California, who better than ByeByeMold?

Mold: More symptoms than you can shake a stick at

According to one study, many cases of mold-linked illness can’t be explained by allergic reactions. A report by allergists David A. Edmondson, DO, Jordan N. Fink, MD, and colleagues at Medical College of Wisconsin, appeared in the February 2005 issue of Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. Symptoms of exposure found in the patients in that study can be diverse, including:

  • runny nose
  • cough
  • headache
  • shortness of breath
  • wheezing
  • chest tightness
  • other breathing problems
  • itchy eyes
  • nervous system problems
  • dizziness
  • anxiety
  • weakness
  • restless legs
  • memory loss
  • shaking
  • intestinal problems
  • nausea, vomiting
  • gut pain
  • nosebleed
  • urinary problems

We always recommend that you get your home tested for mold.

Damp Building Effect

water

The phrase toxic mold syndrome should be replaced by damp building effect, which refers to a well-documented effect. Mold is certainly part of the picture but doctors can’t always define if it is an allergy, mold toxin, or some other factor combined with degrading building materials. There is currently no accurate way to measure mold toxins in damp buildings, although they are there. It is impossible to know what degree and how the toxic mold is doing what it is doing to cause illness. Until scientists catch up to disease, we should all stop arguing and simply work at collecting more data to help everyone refine the issues involved.

Meanwhile, get your home tested.

Indoor Air Quality Experts

iaq
There is more than one thing involved in air quality. There are plenty of toxins out there. Indoor air quality can be affected by Carbon monoxide, radon, cigarette smoke, whatever toxins are floating around in the smoggy air outside your windows, moisture, mold, formaldehyde off-gassing from your floors. The EPA says “health effects may show up shortly after a single exposure or repeated exposures to a pollutant. These include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. Such immediate effects are usually short-term and treatable. Sometimes the treatment is simply eliminating the person’s exposure to the source of the pollution, if it can be identified. Soon after exposure to some indoor air pollutants, symptoms of some diseases such as asthma may show up, be aggrevated or worsened.” You can subscribe to the EPA’s indoor Air Quality Guide at https://www.epa.gov/indoor-air-quality-iaq

Not so hidden mold

coughing

Maybe you’ve been the round with your doctors and can’t find the cause. Maybe there are terrible headaches, or nausea, or swollen faces, and you can’t figure out what it is. Maybe it is mold in your home. Tightly sealed new homes are as efficient at sealing mold inside as they are at keeping the bad weather out. Water damaged drywall could be feeding your mold, as well as any cellulose indoors, especially if you have a humidity problem. Even if your weather tends to be dry, there are steamy areas of the house, like showers, and areas near humidity producing appliances like dishwashers, clothes dryers, even air conditioning.

Maybe the problem is less hidden than you thought.

Ask the experts to help find your mold problem.

Toxic Mold in San Joaquin County Nipped in the Spore

inspect

In San Joaquin County, California, Julia Morgan Elementary School is under attack by mold.

Mold was found prospering underneath wallpaper in a couple of classrooms. Three classrooms in all were worked by an environmental remediation company and pronounced clean. Other classrooms are now being investigated.

Because mold spores are not visible to the naked eye, are samples are taken to determine the types of mold present. The types are determined by laboratory analysis of the air samples. Knowing the type can help in assessing the exposure and severity of human exposure. After remediation, comparison samples are typically taken to help ensure that mold has been successfully removed. Hopefully the problem has been handled in Lodi Unified School District at Julia Morgan Elementary School.

Mold exposure can cause respiratory symptoms, especially in the ill, the elderly and children.

Woodland Hills, CA — (ReleaseWire) — 06/23/2015 — June has been a month of relentless thunderstorms, storms in the Plains, Midwest and Southeast. Torrential rainfall and active tornadoes have left their mark both on the landscape outside, and on the inside of properties. And after the wettest June in history, one can be certain that indoor mold is not far behind. Living in a hot property with tight ventilation, and keeping those windows closed to preserve precious air conditioning, an unsuspecting property owner just might be circulating mold spores throughout the house along with cooled air. All it takes is a little humidity, or a small leak somewhere, and those mold spores take root.
rot
The most vulnerable to mold infestations are the very young, the very old or the very sick. Individuals with compromised immune systems are especially susceptible to respiratory problems. If the home is beginning to smell musty or moldy, a mold inspection is part of the solution. Even if the homeowner doesn’t see it, mold can be growing in the walls or crawlspace. Residents might never know it is there until someone gets sick.

Arrest the mold before the health of residents is damaged, or the structural integrity of the building is compromised. Toxic black mold refers specifically to Stachybotrys chartarum, but individuals can be allergic to any species of mold, whether or not it is toxic, or produces mycotoxins. Toxic black mold is frequently a source of problems because it consumes cellulose, which building materials are rich in.

The ByebyeMold inspector will do these FOUR things.

Bulletproof Coffee Creator Dave Asprey Tackles Toxic Mold Documentary

MOLDY Exposes How Severely Affects an Estimated 100-Million in the United States Alone

Bulletproof Films investigates the dangerous world of toxic environmental mold in the new documentary film MOLDY. Produced by prominent biohacker, bestselling author, and Bulletproof Founder, Dave Asprey, and directed by Kee Kee Buckley and Eric Troyer, the film uncovers the frightening truth about this growing health crisis far more dangerous than asbestos and lead paint, and exposes risks, explains the effects, and shares solutions for keeping our families strong.

MOLDY makes its world premiere Thursday, June 4 at www.bulletproofexec.com/moldy and will continue to be available on the site for a 10-day free screening period. The film will also be available for purchase via digital download and DVD.

“Environmental toxic mold exposure is a massive health crisis that very few are aware of,” said Asprey. “Mold toxins have been linked to damaging long-term effects including memory loss, insomnia, anxiety, depression, trouble concentrating, and even cancer and heart disease.”

He continued, “Industrial changes made to our environment, have left toxic mold more common today than at any time in history. It does not discriminate – everyone is at risk for exposure, regardless of geographic region, climate, socioeconomic status, race, age, or gender. With knowledge comes power and our team at Bulletproof Films is proud to provide MOLDY as a important tool in our continued commitment to educate the world about the science of human performance.”

With the help of top medical experts including Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Daniel Amen, MOLDY will explain and explore the varying degrees of mold toxicity, sharing eye opening, real-life stores of illness, treatment and recovery. The MOLDY free screening period will conclude with a LIVE interactive webinar hosted by Asprey on June 15 (8:00 pm ET/5:00 pm PT.) Participants can join the conversation at https://livestream.com/accounts/11881640/events/4032786

Spring: Time to Schedule Annual Mold Inspection

person in protective suit holding microorganism sample

Spring Mold Brings Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis, Illness, Sick House Syndrome. Experts Call For Annual Testing

Woodland Hills, CA — (ReleaseWire) — Exposure to indoor mold, toxic or black mold is tied to a multitude of illnesses and symptoms and Sick House Syndrome. The most vulnerable are the very young, the very old or the very sick. People with compromised immune systems are especially susceptible. For a property owner, scheduling an annual mold inspection is part of a basic maintenance plan, to keep ahead of water leaks. It is well known that controlling the water, usually controls the mold. Because evidence links indoor mold exposure and respiratory illness, an annual mold inspection is a good maintenance practice.

Mold growth should be arrested before the health of residents is damaged, or the structural integrity of the building is compromised. Toxic black mold refers specifically to Stachybotrys chartarum, but individuals can be allergic to any species of mold, whether or not it is toxic, or produces mycotoxins. Toxic black mold is frequently a source of problems because it consumes cellulose, which building materials are rich in.

In a mold inspection from ByebyeMold, the inspector will do these FOUR things.

Top Four List

1) COLLECT mold spore samples from the air using a calibrated air pump which draws air into a “spore trap.”

2) COLLECT swab samples, if mold appears to be growing on surfaces. A moistened swab will be used to collect the sample.

4) PROVIDE a comprehensive report of the assessment. The written report of the mold assessment includes pictures, moisture readings of walls and random areas, the lab results and an explanation of the lab analysis.

In the event that mold levels inside are higher than levels outside, details about the mold type and location are especially important, both in determining what treatments may be necessary for those exposed, and what processes may be used in order to plan remediation. ByebyeMold believes positive samples indicate the need for additional investigation, supplemental testing, or corrective measures.
