Mold Beware, Zena’s Back Home

The 7-year-old specially trained Belgian Malinois named Zena who has spent six years sniffing out toxic mold went missing Tuesday but there’s a happy ending. 13-year-old Allie Burwell found the lost dog and returned it to its Port Angeles home.

Zena is one of twenty dogs certified in detecting toxic mold. She was trained at Vom Kaiserhofe Training Center in Lawrence, Kansas. Many different breeds of dogs can be trained to detect mold. Hunting breeds are great tracker dogs – particularly effective are Labs, Border Collies, Jack Russell Terriers, Aussies, Beagles and other combinations of these breeds. Dogs can smell active or inactive mold spores.
